In July 2018 Bord Bia became a registered participant of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). Launched in 2000 by the United Nations, the UNGC is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative with over 13,000 corporate participants and stakeholders from over 160 count rises.

The UNGC is uniquely positioned to support companies as they align their practices for a sustainable and inclusive future. The initiative aims to align strategies and operations with universal principles on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption, and take actions that advance societal goals.

The United Nations Global Compact’s new strategy intends to leverage their position and elevate expectations of how businesses will embed all Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact into their operations. The Ten Principles are intrinsic for the sustainability of business, people, and the planet.

To find out more about the Ten Principles click here.

Key principles of the UNGC are communication and collaboration, with all members encouraged to inform stakeholders and the public about their involvement with the Global Compact. Members must actively encourage other business and stakeholders to participate in the UN Global Compact and engage in collaborative projects.

Origin Green and the United Nations Global Compact

Following the launch of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in 2015, Bord Bia recognised the importance of connecting the shared global ambitions of the UN SDGs to the sustainability targets and actions undertaken by Origin Green members. In order to formally incorporate external UN SDG expert advice into the strategic development of Origin Green, Bord Bia joined the United Nations Global Compact.

Bord Bia and the Origin Green programme are uniquely placed to play a pivotal role in helping the Irish food and drink industry deliver meaningful contributions to the advancement of the SDGs and its associated targets. Therefore, Origin Green has aligned its company target areas with the SDGs. This alignment, helps the Irish food industry understand how their targets and most importantly actions, can contribute to the global ambition of the SDGs. The programme now aligns to against 15 of the 17 SDGs at manufacturing level and as it evolves to address new sustainability challenges, the alignment with the SDGs will guide the continued development of the Origin Green Charter.

Find out how Bord Bia is communicating on the engagement with the UNCG and the practical actions that the organization has taken to support the Global Compact and to engage with the initiative. here.
