Animal Welfare
Animal Welfare and the Bord Bia Sustainable & Quality Assurance Schemes
The welfare of animals on farms is a cornerstone principle of the Sustainable & Quality Assurance Schemes. As part of the inspection process, auditors confirm that the animals on certified farms are being treated properly and that farmers are in compliance with animal welfare legislation.
Origin Green is committed to working in collaboration with farmers and key industry stakeholders to continuously improve conditions wherever possible. By monitoring international best practice and availing of scientific research and advice, the schemes and standards are adjusted and improved on a continuous basis.
Animal Welfare in the Origin Green Programme at Manufacturing Level
Food and drink manufacturers; packers of meat and eggs, and processors of primary products that are Origin Green Verified members, are encouraged to include a target in their plan that certifies that their own suppliers have an animal welfare policy in place through a robust sustainable sourcing and procurement policy.
Processor/Packer Level
The processors and packers of primary products (meat & eggs) under Origin Green must verify that they have an ethical policy with regards to sourcing. This can include certification to the farm level Bord Bia Sustainable & Quality Assurance Schemes or equivalent.
